Two years ago it was a "concept" watch. Now it's a real one. The Lange 31, which A. Lange & Sonne unveiled as a prototype at the SIHH watch show in Geneva in 2007, is ready for retail. The watch's almost unique selling proposition is its 31-day power reserve. Only Jacob & Co.'s Quenttin watch is claimed to run as long without winding. The trick in the Lange watch is two mainspring barrels stacked one atop the other, each with a caliper-straining inside diameter of 2.5 cm (about one inch). They take up three-quarters of the movement's footprint.

Each spring is 185 cm (just under 73 inches) long. Lange says the two springs have enough energy to "lift a 100-gram [nearly a quarter-pound] bar of Swiss chocolate 320 cm [10.5 feet]."

Devising a winding mechanism for such strong mainsprings presented a particular challenge: an ordinary winding crown train would not have been up to the task. So Lange looked to the past and chose key-winding instead. The key is square and fits into an aperture in the back of the case. The key has a built-in backstop ratchet to allow smooth winding and a torque limiter to prevent accidental over-winding.

Winding was only one problem created by the watch's long power reserve. The mainsprings' dramatic loss in torque as the days and weeks go by was another. To compensate for the decreasing torque, the company incorporated a constant-force escapement that relies on an auxiliary spring a very large (as you might expect) 31-day power-reserve indicator. Fifteen years ago A. Lange & Sohne made a splash using big numerals in a double window to display the date. Now Lange is using numerals to tell the time.

Since its launch in 1994, the Lange itch has been the "face" of Germany's |Lange & Sohne. The Lange 1, with its off-center hour-and-minutes dial and its patented oversized, double-disc date indicator, inspired by the famous Five Minute numerical cauciock in Dresden's Semper Opera House, has taken its place among horology's design icons. For the past 15 years, that watch has been Lange's most recognized and most important model even the A. Lange & Sohne replica watches are one of the most commonly bought watches on the web today.
Now Lange has introduced a watch that it calls its "new face." The new watch is the Zeitwerk, which the Glashiitte-based firm unveiled at a series of events in Berlin in May. It is, says A. Lange & Sohne CEO Fabian Krone, the firm's most important new product launch since the Lange 1. The most striking (some might say jarring) feature of the Zeitwerk is that it presents the time via jumping hour and minute numerals in windows on the left and right side of the dial.
What Lange has done is taken its signature large jumping numerals, three times larger than those on conventional watches, that it used to present the date on the Lange 1 and re-engineered them for a much harder mission: telling the time. The result is a rare timepiece, in-deed: a high-mechanical watch with a digital display of the hour and minutes.
Jump-hour watches, of course, are a watch-industry staple. Not so jump-minutes watches. The idea to use numerals for both the minutes and the hours has been a dream of the Lange team for a dozen years, since the success of the Lange 1, Lange insiders say. Four years ago, they got serious about it. They developed an entirely new dial design, again inspired by the Semper Opera House clock. This, of course, required an entirely new movement. Lange's technical team, led by product development manager Tony De Haan, created an in-house manual-wind caliber, L043.1, rigged with a number of innovations needed to move not two hands, but three discs. The goal was to have what Lange executives call "a perfect drop" every minute, i.e., to have the numerical discs move into the apertures on the dial simultaneously and precisely.
WHAT LANGE HOPES will be its next famous face is designed around what it calls a "time bridge" that dominates the bottom two-thirds of the dial. The top of the time bridge stretches across the entire dial with frames on each side. The hour numeral appears in the left frame, the minutes on two discs in the right frame. Centered on the bridge, between and beneath the frames, is a large subsidiary seconds dial. The time bridge is made of German silver, a Lange specialty that it customarily uses for its plates and bridges. In the upper portion of the dial is a power-reserve indicator in the traditional German UP/DOWN (AUF/AB) style. Fully wound, the watch has 36 hours of power. The watch's crown is also located on the upper half of the watch, at a position Lange calls "northeast" instead of "2 o'clock" (since there are no hour markers around the Zeitwerk dial). The A. Lange prides itself on the simplicity and practicality of its watch designs. The firm shuns the extreme complexity that is a hallmark of many high mechanical watches these days. Zeitwerk reflects Lange's commitment to simplicity. "The watch is incredibly complex," says Philippe Bonay, president of A. Lange & Sohne USA, "but deceptively simple." The wearer is able to read the time instantly and easily thanks to the large numerals and large seconds dial in the time bridge configuration.
An intriguing aspect of the Zeitwerk, Bonay says, is that the jump-numerals

display offers "a new way to experience the passing of the time. It has to do with a sensory experience. You have a little show every minute. The display engages the ear as well as the eye. The wearer who listens carefully is able to hear the soft little click of the disc-switching action every minute." Listen carefully, Bonay says, and you can distinguish the difference in sound when all three numeral discs move at the top of each hour.
All of this is conveyed by the name "Zeitwerk." The word has multiple meanings in German. It means "time mechanism" but can also mean "time motion" as well as "time masterpiece."
INSIDE THE WATCH'S 41.9-mm case, the L043.1 movement has such traditional Lange hallmarks as a three-quarter plate, hand-engraved balance cock, and screwed gold chatons. It also has a number of innovations. The challenge to Lange engineers was to generate enough torque to move the discs 1,416 times per day, particularly at the top of the hour when all three discs move at once. To get the required amount of torque, they pumped up the mainspring barrel with an extra-strong mainspring. They also developed a dual-function constant-force escapement (patent pending) that acts as a pacemaker to advance the numerals and stabilizes the rate of the movement. In addition, they added an unusual "fly governor" whose fan-like vanes send a fresh breeze through the movement. (For technical details, see sidebars.)

HOW IT WORKS 1: Jumping Numeral Mechanism

To achieve the greatest legibility, the hours and minutes are displayed on the same horizontal axis and in the same large format. Lange calls this "the Lange principle." Two discs indicate the minutes. The unit disc (numerals 0 to 9) and the tens disc (0 to 5) share the same arbor. A constant-force escapement generates the precise minute steps. Every 60 seconds, these steps are transmitted to the disc mechanism as abrupt advances by one-fifth of a revolution (72 degrees) via the driving wheel (1) and the pinion (2), seated on the same arbor.
This incrementally rotating pinion engages with the wheel (3) that carries the units disc. The same wheel is geared to the wheel (4) that, via the switching staff (5) is connected to the tens switching wheel, which carries a finger with a jewel (6). Each time the units disc has performed a complete revolution (every 10 minutes), the jewel engages with the six-toothed switching star (7) of the tens arbor and advances it by one-sixth of a full revolution (60 degrees) just when the units disc jumps from 9 to 0. This moves the tens disc forward by exactly one numeral.
To make sure that the tens arbor cannot move freely outside the switching phases, the switching staff and the tens arbor have two safety elements with a form-fit interlock. However, it is not necessary to secure the units disc separately because it is directly connected with the control pinion of the constant force escapement which itself is blocked by the switching phases.
After it has performed a complete revolution, the tens arbor switches the large hours ring (numerals 1 to 12) forward by one step. For this purpose, it is fitted with a wheel that has only one tooth (8) that engages with the four-toothed switching star (9) of the intermediate hour wheel (10). When the tens disc advances from 5 to 0, the intermediate hour wheel is switched forward by one-fourth of a revolution (90 degrees). In this case, too, a form-fit safety interlock between the tens arbor and the intermediate hour wheel ensures that the hours ring cannot advance inadvertently.
This unusual design approach requires a novel time-setting mechanism: Once the movement is stopped when the crown is pulled, the control lever of the constant force escapement blocks the entire three-disc set. This blocked state is overcome by a mechanism that differs considerably from a hand-setting train. While the time is being set, a roller moves over the tips of the contrate hub (11) that is secured to the driving wheel. Consequently, the arbor to which the roller is connected rotates in accurately defined angular steps, allowing the display to click forward in one-minute increments. The "hopping" movement of the roller over the contrate hub can be observed through the sapphire crystal caseback.

HOW IT WORKS 2: Dual-function Constant-Force Escapement

The constant force escapement of the Zeitwerk, for which a patent is pending, handles two crucial functions. First, it generates the stepper profile for the instantaneous advance of the numerals discs. In this respect, it relies on the strike train principle with warning followed by drop-and-release that was traditionally used in chiming clocks. Second, it delivers nearly constant torque to the balance across the entire autonomy period and thus enhances the rate stability of the movement. This aspect is particularly important because the watch has a high-performance mainspring with a torque characteristic that varies perceptibly between the fully wound and fully unwound states.
The illustration shows the remontoir spring (dark blue beneath the light blue wheel), which has received a defined "charge" of fresh energy from the mainspring barrel via the center wheel and the third wheel pinion and is thus now tensioned. The driving third wheel (light blue, bottom) is stationary in this phase. In the meantime, the remontoir spring transmits the new charge of energy to the driven third wheel (light blue, top) and sets the balance in motion. At this time, the driving third wheel is blocked by the two control pinions (gray). Their upper ends hold a blocking finger (pink) and a blocking disc (yellow) that alternately block the reciprocation's of the two pallet jewels (red) in the arms of the Y-shaped control lever.
Every 60 seconds, the driving third wheel, when released by the control pinions, advances slightly and generates the energy pulse for the switching sequence of the disc mechanism. The control lever, with its cyclical pivoting motions that take their kinetic cues from the escapement, governs the timing of this process. The double roller (green) with its impulse pin (red) rotates once a minute together with the fourth wheel because it is riveted to the same arbor. A few seconds before the top of the minute, the impulse pin moves into the fork of the control lever and slowly pushes it aside against the resistance of the spring.
In the quiescent state of the control lever, the blocking finger (pink) rests against the pallet jewel on the left-hand side. When the control lever deflects, the pallet jewel slips away from the finger. Meanwhile, on the other side, the right-hand pallet jewel of the control lever has descended into the gap of the blocking disc (yellow). As soon as the control lever has deflected to such an extent that the left-hand pallet jewel releases the blocking finger, the wheel train can advance by a tiny distance. (This corresponds to the warning phase in the strike train of a chiming clock.) The amplitude of this motion is just large enough to let the blocking finger slip behind the pallet jewel. At almost the same instant, the right hand pallet jewel drops into the blocking disc gap and the wheel train is stopped again.
As this is happening, the impulse pin increases the deflection of the control lever to such an extent that the pallet fork is suddenly freed. Now, a spring returns the control lever to its original position. This pulls the right-hand pallet jewel out of the gap of the blocking disc and releases it. Both control pinions are now free to rotate until the blocking finger once again stops the movement of the left-hand pallet jewel.
The left-hand control pinion transmits its motion directly to the driving wheel of the disc mechanism that now instantaneously moves forward by 72 degrees and advances the discs. At the same time, the driving third wheel retentions the remontoir spring. To absorb the forces that occur during the abrupt advancing and retensioning processes, the excess kinetic energy is dissipated by a fly governor. Thus, a fresh breeze flows through the movement every 60 seconds.

HOW IT WORKS 3: Mainspring Barrel Bearing System

Lange's patented mainspring barrel design turns the classic wind/unwind principle upside down. It makes sure that the barrel wheel rotates in the friction-minimized bearing while the mainspring is powering the movement but in the bearing with the higher friction rating while the watch is being wound. Consequently, it takes a bit more effort to wind the watch, but in return, more of the mainspring's energy remains available to keep it ticking.
The mainspring barrel is geared to the winding mechanism and held by a stop click that engages with the crown wheel. When the crown is turned to wind the watch, this rotates the mainspring barrel seated in the train bridge. At its outer end, the mainspring is hooked to the barrel, so when the watch is being wound, it is entrained by the barrel and gradually tensioned as it wraps around the barrel core.
The mainspring barrel arbor is suspended between the bearing jewels. The upper jewel is located in the mainspring barrel itself, the lower one in the mainplate. The barrel arbor is connected to the barrel wheel that in turn is geared to the wheel train of the watch. When the spring is tensioned and powering the movement, the driver pin attached to the barrel arbor and the arched recess in the barrel core constitute a so-called form-fit connection. This connection allows the spring to transmit its energy to the barrel wheel. As long as the mainspring is unwinding, the barrel wheel rotates between the two bearing jewels.
The expansion of the barrel core by a barrel arbor represents another design improvement. It simplifies servicing because the mainspring barrel can be lifted out without the need to first remove the train bridge.

The opening in the train bridge and integration of the barrel arbor bearing in the drum create a space large enough to accommodate the 3.32-mm-high mainspring. It delivers the enormous torque required to simultaneously advance up to three numeral discs and concurrently retention the remontoir spring.

"Magnificent" and "bold" are just a few of the superlatives which come to mind when watch lovers describe A. Lange & Sohne timepieces. Reformed in 1994, following the reunification of Germany, this upstart watch company, which is based in Glashutte, has, in just a few short years, established itself as one of the most prestigious luxury watch brands in the world. The company's story is, in many ways, quite compelling.

On December 7, 1845, Adolph Lange set up his own production workshops in Glashutte, near Dresden, laying the foundation of Saxony's - and Germany's - precision-watchmaking industry. For some years, he had been studying ways of producing high-value timepieces of consistent quality in series, and now was the opportunity to realize his ambitions. He started the enterprise with his brother-in-law, the master watchmaker Adolf Schneider, and 15 apprentices.

During his travels, Adolph Lange had drawn meticulously precise plans for new machine tools in his journal/workbook, and had embarked upon the exact determination of movement parts, gearing calculations and conversion tables between the French ligne and the metric system.

His vision and ideas began to take shape. Soon, a fundamental break with many of the traditional artisan techniques became apparent at Adolph Lange's first Glashutte workshops. The introduction of powerful flywheel lathes increased the speed and precision of parts manufacture. His theories on the division of labor encouraged many of his employees over the years to set themselves up in specialist workshops for watch jewels, screws, wheels, mainspring barrels, balance wheels and hands. In this way, Glashutte could become independent from foreign suppliers.

Growing demand for Lange's precision pocket watches, coupled with increasing economic prosperity after the foundation of the German empire, meant that Lange's first workshops soon became too small. Adolph Lange established new facilities for his workforce that had meanwhile grown to almost 60 employees. The buildings, which they occupied in 1873, became the family compound.

The premises accommodated the typical 19th Century business organization of the owner-manager, with the Lange family home and the watch-manufacturing workshops in the same complex.
